The course will offer students the opportunity to develop understanding and skill in the fields of drawing and painting as well as artwork analysis. Portraiture as a genre will be explored, including traditional and contemporary conventions. Students will use a visual diary to capture class notes and drawings, with ideas culminating in a personal painted portrait. 

Students have the opportunity to explore traditional and contemporary Māori Art in the development of a sculptural Pare (door lintel). Knowledge of the elements and principles of art will be built upon, and integrated with research in the production of the finished art work. Investigation of artistic practice from the past and now, will inform drawings, wet-media works as well as the three-dimensional finished work.
