13 PHYSICAL EDUCATION - MĀTAURANGA TINANA

Course Description

Curriculum Leader: Ms T. Murphy.

Level 3 Physical Education involves students learning in, through and about movement in a range of different physical activity environments. The course may include the disciplines of functional anatomy, exercise physiology, sport psychology, skill acquisition and biomechanics, which are applied to critically evaluate physical activities, skills or events. Students will also develop a greater understanding of the sociology of sport, developing the socio-cultural knowledge necessary to critically evaluate their own, others’ and societal involvement in physical activity. Critical thinking, understanding research and reaching coherent judgements are some of the fundamental skills acquired in this course. 

Topics likely to be offered in 2024: 

  • Devising strategies for a physical activity outcome.  

  • Two physical activity contexts are offered to the students and practiced and performed (lawn bowls + one other).  

  • Examining a current trend, event or issue in physical activity and its impact on New Zealand Society. 

  • Risk Management strategies in an outdoor context (Including an overnight camp).

15 NCEA L3 credits, all internal (7 credits count towards literacy).

Course Cost: 

Activities off site and camp: Approx $200

Recommended Prior Learning

Prerequisite - Achieved at least 10 credits at Level 2 PE. 

Open entry to students who did not do Level 2 PE, but a conversation must happen with the Curriculum Leader (Mrs Murphy).

You need to have an interest in being physically active.
